Smart-Border Program Set to Take Effect Later this Year

May 22 2003

This week the Department of Homeland Security set forth more plans for its "smart-border" program called US VISIT. The program will essentially collect photos, fingerprints, and biometric data from visa applicants at U.S. Consulates abroad, and at ports of entry. It will also expand database sharing among government agencies. Congress has mandated that US VISIT be in effect at all U.S. ports of entry by the end of 2003.
