Expired Special Registration Deadlines Extended

January 16 2003

Nonimmigrant males aged 16 and over, who are citizens or nationals from the following countries were supposed to register with an INS office by either December 16, 2002 or January 10, 2003: Iran, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Sudan (by December 16, 2002), and Afghanistan, Algeria, Bahrain, Eritrea, Lebanon, Morocco, North Korea, Oman, Qatar, Somalia, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates, and Yemen (by January 10, 2003).

Men in the above group who did not register by the respective deadlines will now have an additional window from January 27, 2003 to February 7, 2003 to register with the INS.

To register, persons must appear before an INS officer at a designated INS office, and be photographed, fingerprinted, and provide answers to particular questions. Willful failure to register may result in deportation proceedings, and make the foreign national inadmissible to the U.S. in the future.

This requirement DOES NOT apply to permanent residents (green card holders), and those foreign nationals who have already applied for asylum.
