First H-1B Count

April 8 - Today the USCIS announced its current H-1B count for the 2011 fiscal year.  As of the announcement the USCIS had received 13,500 H-1B petitions counting toward the 65,000 cap. The agency had received approximately 5,600 petitions for individuals with advanced degrees from U.S. universities.

The USCIS also stated that it would accept H-1B applications until it believed the cap had been reached.  It will then designate a date to be the last date of acceptance, and conduct a random lottery for all petitions received by the USCIS on that last date.

H-1B's for the 2011 fiscal year permit the H-1B holder to begin working for a sponsoring employer on October 1, 2010.   H-1B visas are for professional workers, who generally require at least a Bachelor's degree for their field.
