CBP Announces Procedures for Departure Issues due to the Icelandic Volcano

April 21 -- The canceled flights due to the eruption of the Icelandic volcano can cause problems for visitors to the U.S. who planned on leaving the U.S. just before the expiration of their I-94 record, but were then unable to leave.  Overstaying the period of stay authorized by the I-94 record can permanently impact future visits to the U.S.   This unintended "overstay", resulting from an emergency, should be accounted for so that it does not adversely affect future visits to the U.S.  The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP)  advised that visitors who arrived on the Visa Waiver Program should contact the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol located at the airport, or contact a local United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS)  office.  Visitors should bring their itinerary for the canceled flight, their passport, and their I-94 record.
For visitors present in the U.S. with a nonimmigrant visa, the (CBP) advises going to the local USCIS office and requesting an extension of their stay.  The CPP announcement leaves out that the filing fee for requesting an extension of stay is $300.
